Introduction
This part of the catalogue maps overstrikes associated with the pre-Hellenistic coin production of Cilicia Trachea. It includes both coins that were overstruck by mints in Cilicia Trachea and coins from Cilicia Trachea overstruck by mints in other regions. The detailed description of each overstrike contains a link to the corresponding entry in the Greek Overstrikes Database (a project initiated and directed by François de Callataÿ) under the abbreviation GOD.

| Remark: | Nothing can be discerned on the photograph of the obverse, but the reverse shows the thigh and calf of a human leg as if in a kneeling position oriented to the right and several other traces of the original design (blue-framed areas in the second image). Human figures kneeling to the right are depicted on staters from Tarsos (satrap on horseback / hoplite kneeling right: SNG France 2, 211–217 and 219–223) and on staters from an uncertain Cilician mint (Amazon ? running or kneeling right / lion attacking bull: e.g. Roma Numismatics Limited, Auction 13, 23 March 2017, Lot 371, acsearch.info URL), but these coin types do not match the remains of the original design above the calf of the preserved leg. However, the traces in the area above the calf correspond very well to the chest of the lion and the edge of its mane, and the area to the right of the upper thigh corresponds to the back of the lion’s torso on the above type of Aspendos staters. Nevertheless, the explanation of the traces in the goat’s beard remains a bit problematic (upper blue-framed area in the second image). |

| Remarks: | (1) | This overstrike was published in Callataÿ 2017, pp. 134 and 143–4 (cat. 28). That this is an overstrike of a Kelenderis stater is likely, but not completely certain. The remnant of the original design is visible only in the left part of the reverse and is deformed due to the new strike. The undertype exergual line is not visible on the coin, but it is clear that the horse’s cannon (assuming the remnant of the undertype design is indeed the rear of a horse) must be at a very sharp angle to the surface. Otherwise, the horse would have been placed too high on the original coin and such a significantly misplaced die does not seem very likely. A depiction of a horse with its hind legs in such a position can be seen, for example, on Type 3.14 whose obverse is in the second image. |

| Remarks: | (1) | Most of the surviving remnants of the original coin design correspond to the above stated type SNG France 2, 177: the letters OΛE, the part of a vine stem and the partially preserved linear borders on the obverse and reverse. The only exception is the crest on Athena’s helmet, which is finely segmented on coins of the type SNG France 2, 177, and does not completely correspond to the traces on this stater. Note that these traces could correspond to the hair of Herakles on Tiribazos’s coins from the Soloi mint of the type SNG France 2, 159 (Bearded head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin around neck / Bearded head of satrap right, wearing bashlyk), but this undertype can be ruled out due to the dotted border on the obverse and reverse and the different profile of the satrap’s nose on the reverse than matches the traces on this stater next to the letters OΛE. The above identification of the undertype is therefore probable, but not absolutely certain. |
