| Remarks: |
| The staters of Type XS.1 and the obols of Type XO.1 form a single group. Probably because of the smaller dies, the obols lack both the Skylla decoration on Athena’s helmet and the Aramaic letters aleph and samekh on the reverse. These letters are clearly visible on the coin from the Brindley collection (specimen no. 1 above) and partially on the coin from CNG Electronic Auction 468 (specimen no. 3 above). |
| The helmeted head of Athena on the obverse and the head of Apollo on the reverse resemble the Holmoi obols of Type 2.2. However, the Aramaic letters on the staters probably rule out an attribution to Holmoi, since Pseudo-Skylax, in his list of Cilician cities, describes Holmoi as “a Hellenic city” (Pseudo-Skylax, Periplous, 102). |
| The obols are somewhat similar to the silver trihemiobols minted at Xanthos in Lycia (see Müseler 2016, VII.35–6). However, the Lycian trihemiobols have a Lycian inscription and a dotted border on the reverse. A dotted border also appears on the reverse of Lycian staters (ibid., VII.31–2) and hemiobols (ibid., VII.33–4) of this type. |
