Die analysis
An overview of the dies used to strike the known Group 1 staters is given in Table 2. All specimens of Type 1.1 listed here were struck from the same obverse die, O1, as shown by several shared details. The reverse die R1, used for variant 1.1a, was apparently soon modified by the addition of the city ethnic; the resulting die, R1b, was subsequently used for all specimens of variant 1.1b. Variant 1.1a thus preceded variant 1.1b.1 Obverse die O2, used for Type 1.2, is stylistically more advanced than O1; Type 1.2 is therefore later.
| Type | Ref. No. | Specimen | Coin dies | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Obverse | Reverse | |||
| 1.1a | HO1001 | 1 | O1 | R1 |
| 1.1b | HO1002 | 1 | O1 | R1b |
| HO1003 | 2 | O1 | R1b | |
| HO1004 | 3 | O1 | R1b | |
| HO1005 | 4 | O1 | R1b | |
| HO1006 | 5 | O1 | R1b | |
| HO1007 | 6 | O1 | R1b | |
| HO1008 | 7 | O1 | R1b | |
| 1.2 | HO1009 | 1 | O2 | R2 |
Table 2: Overview of the dies used to strike individual coins
The use of only two die pairs, O1/R1(b) and O2/R2, indicates that the total production of early Group 1 staters was very limited.

1 The opposite view is held by Tahberer 2024, p. 84, who believes that these coins were struck from multiple reverse dies and that the anepigraphic variant was struck last, after this coin type had become sufficiently familiar for the city ethnic to be omitted.
