Overstrikes

Introduction List of overstrikes Aspendos Kelenderis Nagidos

Introduction

This part of the catalogue maps overstrikes associated with the pre-Hellenistic coin production of Cilicia Trachea. It includes both coins that were overstruck by mints in Cilicia Trachea and coins from Cilicia Trachea overstruck by mints in other regions. The detailed description of each overstrike contains a link to the corresponding entry in the Greek Overstrikes Database (a project initiated and directed by François de Callataÿ) under the abbreviation GOD.

For an analysis of overstrikes on Pamphylian and Cilician silver coins, see de Callataÿ 2017 and de Callataÿ 2022.

References: Coin Catalogue, Kelenderis, Type 1.3.
GOD: Silver ID 26770
Undertype: Aspendos: SNG France 3, 12–13; Roma Numismatics Limited, Auction 19 (26 March 2020), Lot 559 (acsearch.info URL).
Obv.: Hoplite advancing right on dotted ground line, wearing crested helmet and holding shield and spear.
Rev.: Triskeles; EΣTFΔII above; below, lion standing left above ΠΦ; all within incuse square.
Credit: overstrike: AUREA numismatika a.s., eAuction 25 (6 September 2020), Lot 3125 (Livebid.cz URL);
undertype: Roma Numismatics Limited, Auction 19 (26 March 2020), Lot 559 (acsearch.info URL).
Remark: Nothing can be discerned on the photograph of the obverse, but the reverse shows the thigh and calf of a human leg as if in a kneeling position oriented to the right and several other traces of the original design (blue-framed areas in the second image). Human figures kneeling to the right are depicted on staters from Tarsos (satrap on horseback / hoplite kneeling right: SNG France 2, 211–217 and 219–223) and on staters from an uncertain Cilician mint (Amazon ? running or kneeling right / lion attacking bull: e.g. Roma Numismatics Limited, Auction 13, 23 March 2017, Lot 371, acsearch.info URL), but these coin types do not match the remains of the original design above the calf of the preserved leg. However, the traces in the area above the calf correspond very well to the chest of the lion and the edge of its mane, and the area to the right of the upper thigh corresponds to the back of the lion’s torso on the above type of Aspendos staters. Nevertheless, the explanation of the traces in the goat’s beard remains a bit problematic (upper blue-framed area in the second image).

Undertype: Kelenderis, Group 3, uncertain type

undertype: Gorny & Mosch Giessener Münzhandlung, Auction 273 (19 November 2020), Lot 235 (acsearch.info URL).
Remarks: (1) This overstrike was published in de Callataÿ 2017, pp. 134 and 143–4 (cat. 28). That this is an overstrike of a Kelenderis stater is likely, but not completely certain. The remnant of the original design is visible only in the left part of the reverse and is deformed due to the new strike. The undertype exergual line is not visible on the coin, but it is clear that the horse’s cannon (assuming the remnant of the undertype design is indeed the rear of a horse) must be at a very sharp angle to the surface. Otherwise, the horse would have been placed too high on the original coin and such a significantly misplaced die does not seem very likely. A depiction of a horse with its hind legs in such a position can be seen, for example, on Type 3.14 whose obverse is in the second image.
(2) This type of Nagidos staters is dated to the period c. 385/4–375 BC by Casabonne 2004 (pp. 113–4, Type 5), to the period c. 380–360 BC by SNG Levante, and to the period c. 365–3 BC by Lederer 1931 and SNG von Aulock.

undertype: Roma Numismatics Limited, Auction 5 (23 March 2013), Lot 438 (acsearch.info URL).
Remarks: (1) This overstrike was published in de Callataÿ 2017, pp. 134 and 144 (cat. 29). De Callataÿ lists all three potential undertypes stated above, preferring Tiribazos. However, in the Greek Overstrikes Database, the undertype is now atttributed to Evagoras I of Salamis.
(2) This type of Evagoras I’s staters is dated to the period c. 411–374/3 BC. The Tiribazos and Nagidos types are dated to the 380s BC.

Undertype: Soloi: SNG France 2, 177; Roma Numismatics Limited, E-Sale 30 (29 October 2016), Lot 178 (acsearch.info URL).
Obv.: Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet; linear border.
Rev.: Bunch of grapes with tendrils and a leaf; above, ΣOΛEΩN; in lower left field, star; along the left bottom edge, AΠOΛΛΩNI[…]; in lower right field, owl; linear border.
Credit: overstrike: Jean Elsen & ses Fils S.A. (Coll. P. Veselý, NAG-AR-04);
undertype: Roma Numismatics Limited, E-Sale 30 (29 October 2016), Lot 178 (acsearch.info URL).
Remarks: (1) Most of the surviving remnants of the original coin design correspond to the above stated type SNG France 2, 177: the letters OΛE, the part of a vine stem and the partially preserved linear borders on the obverse and reverse. The only exception is the crest on Athena’s helmet, which is finely segmented on coins of the type SNG France 2, 177, and does not completely correspond to the traces on this stater. Note that these traces could correspond to the hair of Herakles on Tiribazos’s coins from the Soloi mint of the type SNG France 2, 159 (Bearded head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin around neck / Bearded head of satrap right, wearing bashlyk), but this undertype can be ruled out due to the dotted border on the obverse and reverse and the different profile of the satrap’s nose on the reverse than matches the traces on this stater next to the letters OΛE. The above identification of the undertype is therefore probable, but not absolutely certain.
(2) This type of Nagidos staters is dated before c. 385/4 BC by Casabonne 2004 (p. 113, Type 4) and to the period c. 350–333 BC by Lederer 1931 (Group X). The identified undertype is dated to the period c. 350–330 BC by SNG France 2.

Weight: 10.10 g
Diameter: 26–27 mm
Obverse: Aphrodite seated left, wearing polos, hair falling in curls, holding phiale in extended right arm, left arm resting on the back of the chair; to left, Eros flying to right, bearing an olive wreath to crown Aphrodite; below throne, mouse; dotted border.
Undertype traces: no identifiable part of the undertype design.
Reverse: Bearded Dionysos dressed in a long robe, standing left, holding grape bunch on vine in extended right hand, thyrsos in left; in left field, control marks; in right field, NAΓIΔEΩN; in upper left field, epigraphic shape of letter Zeta (𐤆); in lower left field, Δ.

Undertype: Uncertain, possibly Aspendos (Tekin 1997, Series 4) or Selge (SNG France 3, 1914–1927).
Obv.: Two wrestlers grappling; dotted border.
Rev.: Slinger in throwing stance right; dotted square border.
Credit: overstrike: Jean Elsen & ses Fils S.A., Auction 30 (12 June 1993), Lot 120;
undertype: SNG France 3, 100 (The Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Gallica, Identifier: ark:/12148/btv1b11317859k).
Remarks: (1) This overstrike was published by Bar 1995 and is also listed in de Callataÿ 2017, p. 144 (cat. 30). The remainder of the square dotted border on the reverse suggests that a possible undertype could be an Aspendos stater of Series 4 according to Tekin 1997, or a Selge stater. However, this identification is very uncertain.
(2) This type of Nagidos staters is dated before c. 385/4 BC by Casabonne 2004 (p. 113, Type 4) and to the period c. 358–6 BC by Lederer 1931 (Group IX).
